you didn't have to do that :: evan

Post by Tinley Ryan on Wed Aug 20, 2014 3:44 am

Tinley was bored. When Tinley was bored bad things tended to happen. Bad things like sneaking out of the orphanage and running away to cause trouble. Ya know.

Today was no different. She was bored, and it was a Wednesday, so she decided she would hit up the little farmer's market that came to town once a week. Clio from Annerb would bring the freshest fruits and veggies from the island and sell them to all the rich folk who could afford them.

It wasn't that Tinley was hungry. Because she lived at the orphanage, she never wanted for anything, really. Other than a mom and dad to actually, you know, love her. No, the problem as I said before, was that Tinley was bored. It didn't help matters that Ronan was off in Dahlin saving up money so that Tinley could move in with him when she settled, or that the rest of her guy friends were playing some stupid game she didn't feel like playing right now.

She walked innocently through the little walkways of the market, taking a look at the fresh produce. She'd shift her eyes around every once in awhile before slipping something from the stands into her side bag. A little corn? Sure. Some peaches? She'd take three, thank you! Suddenly her boredom was gone, and a smile was on her face. See--it always worked.

But as she rounded a corner and shoved some cherry tomatoes in a free pocket, all hell broke loose. An old man with a heavy country accent started shouting some expletives at her before she could even take a step.

"Shoot," she whispered under her breath. She didn't wast a moment before she took off running, racing down the walkways, pushing clio out of her way as she ran for her life.

Evan was out and about today, mainly just to avoid being at home. His parents had just gotten in a big fight that resulted in some expensive china being broken, and were now probably in the awkward, tension-filled post-fight stage, where they went about their usual business while glaring at each other and making passive-aggressive comments. It wasn't the type of thing Evan wanted to be around for.

Just as he was rounding a corner, thinking of things to do to pass the time, another clio came out of nowhere and collided with him, almost knocking them both to the ground. After getting over the initial surprise, he was annoyed by the clio's carelessness until he got a good look at her and realized she was a cute girl. His annoyance vanished.

"Are you okay?" he asked her. Before she could answer, he looked over her head and saw an angry looking farmer running towards them. Whoa, what the hell? He grabbed the girl by the arm and pulled her back around the corner and into a nearby shop. The angry farmer ran right past obliviously. "The hell was that all about?" he asked.

After the initial shock of getting knocked to the ground by some dork, Tinley's mind was already back on the run. If she got caught again, she'd be in serious trouble with Sister Agatha, the nun who handed out punishments at the orphanage.

She hadn't even heard Dork's "Are you okay?" and was surprised again when she was suddenly pulled into a shop.

Dork wrote:"The hell was that all about?"

"What do you think you're doing?" Tinley countered, still looking out the window she saw the farmer run past. Huh. Who knew that was all it would take to lose him?

She turned back to the guy who'd pulled her into the shop, waiting for an answer with a hand on her hip. She guessed he looked a little less dorky now that she got a proper look at him. Kinda cute, actually.

"I guess I just saw a guy chasing you and reacted," Evan replied, a little put off by the girl's attitude. Hadn't he just helped her? Then again, why had he helped her? He didn't even know why the guy was running after her. For all he knew she had done something to the guy to instigate him. Farmers didn't just randomly run after girls in the middle of broad daylight for no reason.

You weren't thinking with your brain when you helped her, Eldrich pointed out with a snicker. Evan just pointedly ignored him.

He looked at the girl a little more scrutinizingly. "Why was he chasing you?" he asked. "What did you do?"

"I wasn't aware that was any of your business," Tinley replied.

She pulled a peach out of her bag. It was bruised and squishy from her tumble. "Damn." She dropped it on the ground and pulled out another. Less damage. She took a bite.

"Get out of my store with that!" the woman who owned the store crowed from behind the counter. She didn't want sticky peach juice on her hand sewn outfits.

Tinley rolled her eyes and took another bite before stepping out. She left the discarded peach on the floor where hopefully it would stay until it got moldy and smelly.

"You're still here?" she asked the boy who had followed her out of the shop, I'm assuming.

He watched the girl pull a peach out of her bag. That, combined with his knowledge of the farmer's market going on in town, tipped him off. It didn't take a genius to figure out that he had just helped a thief get away from the guy she stole from. Great. Just great.

He grabbed her bag off her shoulder and held it up high. He might not be tall, but this girl was short enough that she wouldn't be able to reach it. "You took those from that guy, didn't you?" he asked her. He started walking in the direction the farmer had run in, intending to return his merchandise, even if it was a little worse for wear. "You're a piece of work, you know that?"

"Oh, I'm a piece of work?" she asked, not bothering to keep the irritation out of her voice. "You're stealing from me right now!" What a... what a... whatever that big word was that meant clio were doing something they thought was wrong.

    Tinley, it's a hypocrite.

Evan ignored her as he finally saw the farmer up ahead, walking back towards them and muttering angrily under his breath. "Excuse me sir, I think I have something that belongs to you," he said to the man, who got an outraged expression on his face when he saw the girl behind him.

"She's a thief," he said, pointing at her. "Besides, I can't sell these now."

Evan sighed. "Here," he said, pulling out his wallet and giving the guy way more cash than the produce was worth. "Just let me deal with her, okay?"

The guy looked like he wanted to say more, but he grabbed the cash and stomped off, glaring at the girl the whole time. Evan casually walked over to a nearby trashcan and emptied the stolen food into it, before tossing the bag back at the girl. "If you try to pull that again you're going to end up in jail," he warned.

Tinley's expression changed from irritated to shocked when Dork dumped all her fresh produce in the garbage. "What gave you the right to do that?" she demanded as she snatched her bag up.

Well it was pretty nice of him to pay for it, Ravka said disapprovingly. He hated when she did stuff like this. And it was only to prove something to the world, which made him even more irritated by it.

"And they're not going to stick me in jail," she said angrily, ignoring her daemon. "I haven't even settled yet--they couldn't even if they wanted to."

"What gave you the right to steal from a guy who's just trying to make a living?" he countered.

"And they're not going to stick me in jail," she said angrily, ignoring her daemon. "I haven't even settled yet--they couldn't even if they wanted to."

Evan looked at the girl like she was an idiot. "Yes they can," he said. What did she think they did with teenagers who broke the law, give them a stern warning and let them go? Sure she wouldn't get tried and sentenced to jail time, but there was nothing stopping them from sticking her in a cell for a few days to learn her lesson.

"They can?" Tinley asked. Sure, the nuns back at the orphanage had sometimes threatened her with that, but she'd never thought they were telling the truth.

"Well I'm just trying to get a decent lunch," she told him, referring to his first comment. "It's not my fault all his stuff was overpriced."

"Then go somewhere else to eat," Evan replied with zero sympathy, rolling his eyes. Mainly because he knew this girl was totally bullshitting. No one too poor to buy food would come looking for lunch in Lilycove. "And yeah, they can." He'd actually had an unsettled friend who spent a weekend in jail for smoking pot. He wasn't allowed to be friends with him after that.

"What's your name, anyways?" he asked. He had been talking to this girl for a good ten minutes and he was tired of referring to her as "this girl" in his head.

"Tinley," Tinley said to Dork. She didn't bother shaking his hand or asking for his name. Dork suited him just fine.

"And I'm Ravka," said Tinley's daemon, who was standing next to his clio as a dalmatian. He felt Tinley glare at him, but continued anyway, "Thank you for helping us. And sorry for knocking you over." He hated making up for Tinley's lack of manners, but he hated sitting in silence while she lacked even more.

    "What's your name?"

Evan smiled at the daemon, Ravka. At least he was polite, unlike his ungrateful clio. "It's no problem. I'm Evan," he replied. "And this is Eldrich." Eldrich, who was sitting on his shoulder, nodded his little green bird head in a greeting.

He looked back at Tinley, who looked all moody and annoyed. Luckily Evan had a lot of experience with appeasing moody, annoyed girls. "Look, if you're really so hungry, I'll buy you lunch, okay?" he offered, even though she honestly didn't deserve it. He had just always been taught to be nice to girls no matter what. It was all part of the image he was taught to uphold.

Tinley's eyebrows raised. "You want to buy me lunch?" she asked, almost laughing.

Ravka shook his little doggie head slightly. Why did Tinley have to be so rude?

"Well, far be it from me to stop you from taking me out," Tinley said with a wave of her hand and an air of self righteousness. "And since you threw away my food, I guess it's only fair that you buy me something else to eat."

She ginned at Dork Evan and his pretty bird daemon he didn't deserve. She wondered momentarily what Ravka would settle as.

"You kind of remind me of my girlfriend," Evan commented, not elaborating that he did not mean that as a good thing. His girlfriend was probably one of the reasons he had such a high tolerance for rude, ungrateful girls. "Anyways, I know this nice cafe nearby. Let's go."

He lead her to this nice little soup n' sandwiches place called Cat Cafe where they sat and ordered food. "So are you from around here?" he asked. She definitely didn't seem like the typical Lilycove resident.

"She must be awesome, then," Tinley responded, following Evan to wherever he was taking her.

He ended up taking her to Cat Cafe, which, if Tinley had had any money at all, she would probably return to quite often. The whole place was decorated with cat things. How cute!

"Well sorta," Tinley began, slurping on whatever she had ordered to drink. "I'm from the orphanage just outside of town." She didn't care what anyone thought, so she wasn't embarrassed or anything. "You must be from here though, huh?" she said, looking at his fancy smancy clothes and remembering his stacked wallet.

She was from the orphanage, huh? Well that explained why she hadn't been brought up in typical Lilycove fashion, what with manners and respect and whatnot. He guessed he couldn't fault her for that. She didn't seem sad or bothered by her upbringing though, so he didn't bother with sympathies. She would probably just scoff at them anyways.

"Yeah, born and raised," he replied with a slight sigh. It sure would be nice to get out of Lilycove one of these days and really experience the rest of the world. Oh well, like that was ever gonna happen.

Tinley's eyebrows raised. "You don't seem like you like it too much." She h mKIO
]9ad thought anyone who lived in such a nice city and had such nice things would be thrilled to live there.

"Too-rich parents trying to buy your love?" she asked. Other clio had no rich parents to buy their love, and also no love. Oh well.

"Never said I didn't like it here," Evan replied evenly, taking a sip of the coffee he'd bought. "I'm perfectly happy where I am and have nothing to complain about."

That monotone, though, Eldrich said teasingly. Real convincing, Evan. Evan often sounded like he was reading from a script when talking about himself or his family, mainly because a lot of his "lines" had been fed to him by his parents.

Tinley doubted that. Plus he hadn't answered the parents bit.

The waitress brought over their food. Tinley had gotten a salad and half a sandwich. Turkey, or something. "Thank you!" she told the lady as she dropped off their orders and then scurried back to the kitchen or some other table or something.

She smiled at her food. She'd gotten something for free, anyway. Even if the dork had thrown away her spoils.

"So, why're ya out and about today?" she asked before chomping into her sandwich.

Oh, so she could be polite after all. Who knew. Evan also thanked the server and began to eat the soup he had ordered when Tinley started up a conversation. "Oh, you know," he said vaguely. Avoiding my crazy family. "Enjoying the beautiful day. Rescuing girls from angry farmers. Stopping thieves. The usual."

Tinely couldn't help but smile, even if that smile was more like a smirk. Dork was kinda funny.

"You sound so heroic when you put it that way," Tinley teased. "I remember it quite differently, of course."

She sat down her sandwich and took a sip of what I decided was lemonade.

"Well," Tinley started with a smile on her face, "There I was, walking innocently in the market place munching on some tomatoes, when out of nowhere a big angry farmer man started chasing me."

She paused, wishing she had those tomatoes still. "Then, all of a sudden, this guy steps out in front of me." She looked pointedly at Evan. "He knocks me down. Lets the angry farmer man catch me. And then he throws away all my food."

She took a sip of her lemonade. "He did end up buying me lunch though, so that was nice of him." She grinned.
