    darkness :: max

Post by Skylar Eligius on Sun May 07, 2017 11:22 am

By Skye's not so careful count it had been close to three days since the abduction. Three days without food or water. Three days surrounded by screaming and crying children, all taken from their warm beds at a school they loved and felt safe at. Three days in the dark.

It was very disorienting, not being able to see. Being unsettled did have it's advantages, however. At the beginning, before her stamina had started to fade from lack of nourishment, Skye had been able to see, in very grainy definition, her surroundings. That, she was sure, was what had kept her sane in all the blind moments since.

Her hunger pangs were unbearable, her thirst dry on her throat and mouth. Maybe it hadn't been three days. Maybe you couldn't live for three days without water? Skye couldn't remember anymore. All she knew was that the children had grown quieter as time passed, and now there was barely any talk at all. Intermittently there were screams, cries out from the dark, but nothing like it had been in the beginning. No one moved, either. This was both better and worse at the same time--less stumbling over each other, less tripping or hitting or anxious fighting, but also, less hope. The silence was as much because of their giving up as it was because of their lack of food and water and sunlight.

She'd tried to comfort the younger ones from earlier on. But as the time passed it became harder. How long could you sell the "it'll be alright"s, the "help will be here anytime"s? Skylar knew she was the oldest one here, it had been well known at school that she was the oldest unsettled girl at Redfern. She felt a duty to protect and comfort as much as possible. But she had to admit, she was losing faith, herself.

She knew they'd been taken by Deilig clio, she knew that only the unsettled children had been targeted, and from her hours with sub-par night vision she knew they were somewhere in the woods; that guards were surrounding them on all sides that didn't have a fucking wall barricading them in. She'd walked the perimeter, trailing her fingers along whatever stone was keeping them trapped. It had been no luck of course, and slow going. She tried telling other students to do the same--to use their night vision, but the panic from the younger kids was almost impossible to break through at the time. And once they started calming down there was less energy from everyone.

Now she sat with her back against the wall. She wasn't on the outside of the perimeter, but she was close enough to hear if the guard spoke with anyone. She wanted to keep tabs on what they said, if they went anywhere. And it had paid off--minutes ago another officer had come to speak to Bollo, the guard stationed near her, and said that they'd be bringing water. If Skylar had had any saliva left in her mouth, it would have been watering.

"Max," she said to the boy she'd met in the darkness, "Max, they're bringing water." He didn't respond, so she shook him awake. "Max," she repeated, her voice raspy, "Max, they're bringing us water."

Max couldn't quite remember a lot from the initial day he was kidnapped. He had been dragged from his warm bed in the middle of the night, tried to fight, tried to run, but eventually he found himself in this black hole. Terrified, all he could do amongst the screaming children was call out for his younger brother. He shouted Paydon's name until he thought his throat would bleed. Eventually he realized that Paydon managed to escape, and there was one ounce of relief that he clung to.

He found more solace in the darkness when he found Skylar. He vaguely knew her at school. She had been on the swim team, and he also knew her to be the oldest unsettled clio at Redfern. Back when life was less scary and more simple, he and his friends had made fun of her behind her back, but now he was glad he found her. Skylar seemed to keep him sane, with her hope and optimistic talk of rescue, it helped him feel hopeful too.

Max knew that his sister was looking for him, she probably had her entire army searching high and low, but as the days passed on, and the darkness grew quieter, his hope was starting to dwindle more and more.

Max kept close to Skylar in the darkness, and if he didn't feel her presence near his he'd start to panic and cry out for her. He felt like a small child, and he hated it, but she was all he had now. He had been dozing off, against a cold stone wall when he heard her voice rouse him.

Skye wrote:"Max, they're bringing us water."

"What?" he rasped. He licked his dry, cracked lips. It had been forever since his last sip of water. Oh, how he took it for granted at Redfern. If he ever got out of this, he'd never take the simplest things like that for granted ever again.

She grabbed Max in the dark, felt for his hand. She laced her fingers through his and squeezed. She'd been half sure they intended to thirst them to death, though it hadn't made sense; why go through the difficulty of kidnapping them all if they were just going to let them die?

Bollo spoke, close to where Skylar sat with Max.

"Well thank fuck you're here. How long did I need to stay here in the dark?"

But ouldn't deilig clio see in the dark?

"Oh, please. What kind of soldier are you? Afraid of the standing in the dark for a few hours?"

"Easy for you to say. You can see in the dark!"

    "Sounds like a personal problem."

"Pick someone out and bring them here. Let's get on with it." Bollo was pissed. Skye wondered what eilemaiden he was if not deilig. Why was he here? Why would they station a soldier who couldn't see in the dark here...in the dark?

The deilig soldier Skye didn't know the name of picked up his voice. "Hey little mongrels, who's thirsty?"

There was rustling in the dark. Children were being roused out of their catatonic states, waking up from fitful slumbers. And then the whispers started. A chorus of raspy "me!"s floated from the darkness. Some sounded cautious, some sounded excited. All sounded desperate.

"Excellent," the soldier said. "You're first!" The sound of stumbling was heard as Skye imagined the soldier grabbing a child and dragging him to the water. She waited to hear the sound of gurgling, or a relieved sigh as a dehydrated kid tasted his first sip in days.

"Drink," said Bollo from the darkness.

A scream cracked the quiet wide open as a bright shock of light lit up the chosen child. Skylar pulled her head away, closed her eyes, gasped and rubbed her face. Waking up to the sun after a nap was hard enough--seeing a bright plume of light after days in the dark was excruciating.

"Why?" The chosen child, a boy, wailed. "What's happening?"

"Drink," Bollo repeated, ignoring the question.

Skylar heard the boy fumble for the water, imagined the wetness touch his tongue, before another shock of light ripped through the dark.

    "AH!" screamed the boy.

    "Drink."

"It hurts!" the boy choked, his voice still dry and raspy. Dry sobs.

"Are you thirsty? Do you want the water? Drink."

For the third time Skye listened to the water slosh as the boy tried to drink. For the third time light quickly illuminated the boy's anguished face before Skylar had to close her eyes and look away. He screamed in agony again before Skye heard him hit the ground.

"No water for you then. Who's next?"

It happened again, and again. Children were pulled out of the crowd and offered a drink. Immediately after beginning, they were shocked. Slowly Skylar was able to watch the abuse, her eyes adjusting to the light.

It didn't take long for her to get the picture. Bollo couldn't see because he was Solas. And Bollo was going to shock each and every kid who dared ask for a drink of water.

Max weakly squeezed Skylar's hand in return. His heart was pounding as he listened to the exchange between the guards, but having Skye there with him helped calm his nerves. He thought it strange too, that the guard called Bollo was complaining about the darkness. Deiligs should be able to see everything around here, why was this one so concerned?

Their questions were answered when the first child got shocked. Max looked on in terror as each child, desperate for water was shocked until they passed out, or died. Max couldn't tell from this far away. He started to feel nauseous, despite the emptiness of his stomach. Why were they doing this? And why was this clio from solas working for Deilig like this?

While Skylar looked away, Max couldn't keep his eyes off of the scene that was happening before him. Anger surged deep within his belly. All he could think about was what if this was happening to Paydon? These kids were little brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. Innocent little kids who didn't deserve this.

"Stop!" Max rasped. He let go of Skylar's hand and stood. "Stop!"

Bollo continued the torture until he noticed one of the older kids starting to approach him. "What do we have here?" he sneered. "Trying to be a hero boy? Or are you just thirsty too?"

"Why don't you pick on somebody your own size?" Max replied defiantly. "They're just little kids, they don't deserve this!"

Bollo's sneer turned into a angry scowl. How dare this kid try and stand up to him? With an electrically charged fist, Bollo punched the brat square in the jaw. Weakened already by the lack of food and water, Max fell to the ground.

"Does anybody else want to be a hero today?" Bollo shouted.

Skye screamed as Max fell to the ground. The many children around them were crying, begging for water or asking not to be punished.

"What about you, princess?" Bollo asked Skye, producing a ball of light in his hand. "You thirsty?"

The decision was impossible--she and everyone else would die soon without water, but the shocks Bollo was giving out was almost as deadly. Until this moment Skye hadn't been sure the level of danger they were all in, but now it was painfully obvious.

"Yes," she said, her voice as defiant as she could muster. She needed a drink, shock or not. It was her best chance. There was no use trying to fight back, she knew. It was probably why the men had waited so long to give them anything to drink--no one would be strong enough to fight back. And all would be desperate enough to at least try for a sip.

    How many would live?

"Let's go, girl. You've got a lot of clio in line behind ya."

She walked to Bollo, staring him in the eyes until she reached him. His sneer never went away. She let him tip the water jug to her lips, bracing herself. For a few glorious seconds she drank the water deeply, relishing the cool wetness on her tongue and throat. She drank quickly, as much as she could as quickly as she could, before she felt the shock of electricity light up her veins.

She tried not to scream, had begged herself not to, but the thoughts went out the window as she felt the current race through her body. A piercing scream filled the night and she fell to her knees.

She was still shaking when he stopped, her breathing heavy. She looked up at him, overwhelmed by a feeling of hatred.

"Want more?" he asked, a smile on his face.

    Yes. No. Yes.

She stood and nodded. Took another drink. He let her go a few seconds longer this time before shocking her. She fell to the ground again, another scream escaping her lips.

    Bollo laughed mercilessly.

    "Next!"

Skye crawled over to where Max was sitting on the ground. "There's nothing we can do. These kids need water. We need water. Yelling at them isn't going to do anything." But she wasn't sure if that was true or if she was defending her actions.

After the initial shock and pain wore off from Bollo's punch, Max sat up and watched helplessly as Skylar drank and suffered at the same time. He wanted to help, he wanted to do something, but he was already weakened before the punch from the lack of food and water. He never felt so defeated in his life before.

Eventually Skylar had enough and she crawled to him.

Skye wrote:"There's nothing we can do. These kids need water. We need water. Yelling at them isn't going to do anything."

Max knew she was right, but he wished that she wasn't. When they next child came to Bollo for water, he turned away this time, and buried his face into Skye's hair, his chin resting on her shoulder. He couldn't bear to watch another child suffer.

It seemed as if days went by before Bollo had finally finished with each child before turning back to Skylar and Max.

"Okay Mr. Hero," he mocked. "Come get your fill."

Bollo approached the two and kicked Max in the shoulder to separate them. Max grunted then stood, his chin raised defiantly. There was a little bit of fight left in him yet. Bollo allowed him to drink for only a few seconds before shocking him. He would either break this kid or kill him. Max screamed through gritted teeth until the pain stopped and Bollo allowed him to drink again. It went on like this a few more times before Max finally fell back to the ground.

He was on his knees until Bollo kicked him. Max fell, and then rolled onto his back and stared up at nothing. The pain was still radiating through his body, and he briefly wondered, no, hoped that he was dying.

Skye wondered if the water had had some sort of sedative in it. It was not near enough to quench anyone's thirst, and yet every single child was now calm. Even she, after drinking, had felt oddly peaceful. She knew she was still afraid--she could feel the panic deep down--but she had to struggle to grasp at it. And it was so much easier to just...sit.

She watched numbly as Max fell to the ground. There were dead bodies of children laying to the side of where Bollo and the Deilig guard stood. She sat surrounded by injured kids, and all she could do was stare around.

Sedative, definitely. The question was why?
